Risks of Gum Disease

Did you know that the more advanced your gum disease is, it also impacts other health conditions? Scientific research shows a proven relationship between the severity of periodontitis and conditions like:

  • Premature labor and low birth weight infants
  • Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, heart attack and high blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Erectile dysfunction

…And many more

Symptoms include gums that bleed when you brush or floss, gum recession or swelling, bad breath, tartar buildup, and tooth mobility.

The Treatment Process

Three women and their three beautiful white smileOur periodontal program includes a series of scaling and root planing visits (“deep cleanings”) that remove calcified bacteria from the surfaces of your teeth. This creates a clean environment that is easy to manage at home, allowing the disease to be eliminated completely.

After your deep cleaning, we will provide routine preventive therapies to manage your condition as your mouth heals. If necessary, other types of therapies like bone grafting, locally placed antibiotics or gum grafting may be needed. Our dentists will discuss his findings with you as well as his recommendations for maintaining a healthy, disease-free smile.

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms of gum disease or haven’t seen a dentist in several years, call Monrovia Family Dentistry or schedule your appointment online.
